Uber Laid Off 3,300 People and Bid $15 Billion for Delivery Hero on the Same Day

The same internal email that announced 10% of Uber's workforce would be eliminated also previewed the largest food delivery acquisition attempt in history. Khosrowshahi is cutting to fund an empire. Whether the arithmetic works depends on whether Delivery Hero's operations in markets Uber doesn't already own are worth more than the disruption of eliminating them from 14 where it does.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi sent an internal email on Wednesday announcing the elimination of 3,300 positions — approximately 10 per cent of the company's global workforce — and simultaneously disclosed a fifteen-billion-dollar takeover bid for Delivery Hero, which Delivery Hero's board endorsed as "fair and adequate." The structural changes announced in the same message: reduce management layers by 20 per cent, cut teams with one or two members by 50 per cent, eliminate positions more than seven layers from the CEO, and convert all but less than 1 per cent of roles to on-site. Engineering, science, and delivery divisions are being consolidated; restaurant, retail, and direct delivery operations are merged.

Prosus, which holds 17 per cent of Delivery Hero, agreed to sell its stake. Delivery Hero will divest operations in 14 markets where Uber Eats already operates to SSW Partners for 1.6 billion dollars as a precondition of the deal. Uber requires 50-per-cent-plus-one share acceptance to close.

The food delivery consolidation context is necessary. DoorDash acquired Deliveroo for 3.87 billion dollars earlier in 2026. Grab pursued Foodpanda. The category is compressing into a small number of global operators, and the companies not executing acquisitions now are watching the acquirable assets disappear. Khosrowshahi's decision to use the layoff moment to also announce an acquisition is a communications choice that reflects the arithmetic he is presenting to investors: the workforce reduction funds the acquisition capacity; the acquisition creates the global scale that justifies the retained headcount.

The operative question for Delivery Hero shareholders is whether Uber can create value from assets it will simultaneously be integrating, restructuring, and partially divesting across 14 markets. The operative question for Uber's workforce is whether the consolidation and management-layer cuts stop at 3,300 or represent the first phase of a larger rationalisation as integration with Delivery Hero proceeds. Both questions are currently unanswered.
