Stripe and private equity firm Advent International formally ended their joint pursuit of PayPal on Friday, per The Information, sending PayPal's shares down 12 per cent. The reported acquisition framework had valued PayPal at approximately 53.4 billion dollars. Stripe had announced the acquisition of OpenRouter for more than seven billion dollars earlier in August, and the accumulation of large commitments appears to have narrowed appetite for a far larger transaction. For PayPal, which has operated under sustained competitive pressure from Apple Pay, Block, and fintech challengers while simultaneously managing a brand identity that predates the smartphone era, the deal collapse removes the strategic optionality of a Stripe combination and forces the company to make a standalone case to investors. The acquisition, had it closed, would have created a payments infrastructure entity spanning merchant processing, developer tooling, and consumer wallet at a scale with no prior precedent in the sector.
