SoftBank in Talks to Acquire Majority Stake in Humanoid Robot Maker 1X at $6 Billion

The sector has moved from research category to M&A category. The SoftBank discussions, if confirmed, mark the transition decisively.

SoftBank is in advanced discussions to purchase a majority stake in 1X, the Norwegian humanoid robotics company whose NEO robot line targets factory and warehouse deployment, at a valuation of approximately six billion dollars. If completed, the deal would give SoftBank controlling influence over one of the more commercially active humanoid robot startups and would represent another concentrated robotics bet from a firm that also led Arm's AI transition and was a major Boston Dynamics backer. The humanoid robotics sector has moved, over the past twelve months, from a research-and-demonstration category characterised by compelling videos and limited commercial deployment to an M&A category characterised by nine-figure funding rounds and strategic acquisition discussions. The SoftBank negotiations, if they produce a transaction, mark that transition with the kind of institutional endorsement that typically precedes a category's full maturation into competitive mainstream infrastructure.
