The Prompt Engineer's Dilemma: A Discipline That Is Simultaneously Maturing and Becoming Obsolete

As models become more capable of inferring intent from imprecise instructions, the craft of prompt engineering is evolving from a technical skill into something closer to strategic communication.

Prompt engineering — the practice of crafting inputs to language models in ways that reliably elicit high-quality outputs — occupies a peculiar position in the current technological landscape. It is simultaneously a specialised discipline in high demand, a set of skills being codified into formal curricula at universities and corporate training programmes, and a practice that the most capable current models are progressively rendering unnecessary through their improved ability to infer intent from ambiguous instructions.
