Google Opened Its Home Platform to All MCP-Compatible AI Agents — Claude and ChatGPT Can Now Control Your Nest Devices

Early access launched 16 September for Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers ($20/month). Agents can review camera summaries, monitor activity, control Matter-compatible devices. First major consumer IoT platform to open its control plane to all MCP-compatible agents, not only first-party assistants. The physical home is now an agentic execution environment.

Google opened early access to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Google Home on 16 September, enabling any MCP-compatible AI agent — including Claude, ChatGPT, and third-party agents — to control Nest devices and Matter-compatible products via natural language. Agents can review camera summaries, monitor activity, control connected appliances, and build custom smart-home dashboards. Access is initially limited to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers ($20 per month) in the US. This is the first major consumer IoT platform to open its control plane to all MCP-compatible agents rather than first-party assistants only — establishing the physical home as an agentic execution environment reachable by any agent the user configures. The MCP standard, now adopted by both Anthropic and OpenAI as a universal agent middleware layer, gains its first significant consumer hardware integration with the Google Home deployment.
