Google rolled out Gemini 3.8 Live models to its Search Live feature on 15 September, enabling real-time spoken conversations with web-linked responses in the Google app. The update allows users to ask queries verbally, receive spoken AI answers drawn from live web data, continue with follow-up questions in either voice or text, and conduct multilingual exchanges within a single persistent session. Search Live has been available in limited beta since earlier in 2026; the Gemini 3.8 Live integration is its first deployment on a model capable of real-time voice generation with web grounding at scale.
The GEO implications are structural. AI Overviews, AI Mode, and standard conversational AI responses are all text-mediated surfaces: the user reads a cited response, which may or may not name the source, which may or may not include a clickable link. Audio responses introduce a citation format that does not currently exist in any standardised form. A spoken answer cannot display a hyperlink. A Gemini 3.8 Live response that draws on a specific source may attribute it verbally — "according to [publication]" — or may not attribute it at all. The brand visibility signals GEO practitioners have built — monitoring AI citation frequency in text responses, tracking source attribution across Perplexity and ChatGPT — have no direct equivalent for audio. Server-log AI bot visits will capture Gemini 3.8 Live crawling, but connecting crawler activity to spoken citation is not yet instrumented.
For content structured for GEO: the format properties that make text content citable — concise declarative sentences, named entities, specific figures, publication attribution — also make it audibly citable. The optimisation principles transfer; the measurement infrastructure does not yet exist. Brands with strong text-GEO performance should monitor whether audio search referral traffic emerges in analytics as Search Live usage scales. The surface launched on 15 September; its citation patterns will become visible in server logs before they become visible in any Google-provided dashboard.
