The search term "Sam Altman ChatGPT water usage" spiked over 1,000 per cent on Google Trends on Thursday — the verified highest-velocity technology search of the day, driven by reporting on the water consumption associated with OpenAI's data centre infrastructure. A large language model query consumes approximately ten times more water than a traditional web search, through the cooling systems required to manage the thermal load of GPU clusters operating at sustained high utilisation. At the scale of ChatGPT's usage — estimated at over 200 million active weekly users as of mid-2026 — the aggregate water consumption is a measurable fraction of regional freshwater resources in the areas where data centres are concentrated.
