ChatGPT Ads Rolls Out Smart Bidding and Expands to Latin America as OpenAI's Ad Platform Matures

With automated bidding, granular platform targeting, and view-through attribution now live, OpenAI's paid media product has moved from experiment to credible performance channel — and it has chosen this moment to enter Brazil and Mexico.

OpenAI's paid media platform has added capabilities that move it meaningfully closer to the performance advertising maturity of established channels. The "Maximize results" bidding strategy — which automatically adjusts bids toward a campaign's selected goal, mirroring the approach that Google popularised with Performance Max — reduces the manual optimisation burden that had been a persistent friction point for performance marketers evaluating the channel. Simultaneous additions of granular platform targeting across iOS, Android, and web surfaces, and view-through conversion attribution at campaign and ad-group level, address two of the most frequently cited measurement gaps in the platform's prior iteration.

The concurrent expansion into Brazil and Mexico is not incidental. Latin America represents one of the fastest-growing regions for AI assistant adoption and an advertising market where Google and Meta have historically faced less competition from technology-native alternatives than in North American and European markets. The timing — releasing advanced bidding mechanics alongside geographic expansion — suggests deliberate sequencing: establish measurement credibility before scaling spend.

Performance marketers evaluating ChatGPT Ads should approach the view-through attribution addition with the same scrutiny applied to similar features when they were introduced elsewhere: view-through conversions inflate reported performance relative to last-click or multi-touch models, and the attribution window configuration will determine how material that inflation proves in practice. The channel's genuine incremental value — reaching users during AI-assisted research and consideration rather than at the point of active intent — is real; the measurement frameworks should reflect that distinctiveness rather than default to the metrics of older channels.
