Anthropic's agreement with Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company founded in 2024, represents a six-year commitment to approximately forty-five billion dollars of computing capacity delivered via Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips from Nscale's West Virginia data centre. Services are scheduled to come online in late 2027. The deal follows, in the space of a single year, commitments of ten billion dollars with Volta, five billion dollars with AMD, and separate infrastructure arrangements with SpaceX, Amazon, and Google. The aggregate picture is of a company systematically securing, years in advance, the computational infrastructure required to operate at the frontier through the end of the decade.
The strategic logic is straightforward: the most significant constraint on frontier AI development is access to compute at the moment it is needed. Organisations that lock in long-term agreements at current prices — before the widespread deployment of next-generation data centres drives competition for premium capacity — position themselves for a structural cost advantage at the training scale that will define frontier performance in 2028 and beyond.

Securing a forty-five-billion-dollar contractual commitment requires a counterparty willing to make a judgment about Anthropic's operational longevity over a six-year horizon. Nscale, in accepting the agreement, has evidently made that judgment.
